How does Calcium Nitride get made?


Ca3N2 forms when calcium is heated in the atmosphere with the oxygen CaO. Dehydrated fibrous metallic calcium is heat to 450°C using a nitrogen stream purified. The metallic calcium then is converted into calcium Nitride after three to four hours.

It can either be dark at 350°C, creamy white at 350° to 1150°C, golden yellow at 1150°C and higher, depending on how it was prepared. The calcium nitride that forms can be easily identified because of its ability to react with moisture and water, resulting in calcium hydroxide or ammonia.
