First, fatty is ethoxylated with fatty oil to make fatty polyoxyethylene ether. Then it is esterified by methanol. Second, methanol is used to produce methyl glycol polyether. This then proceeds to esterify the fatty acid. Two steps are required to produce the above product. It also costs a high amount of money and has lots of waste products, such as polyethylene glycol or diesters. Third is direct addition of the fatty acid, methyl ester to ethylene oxide. It is a quick process and costs little. The main FMEE-producing companies, Sihe Petroleum or Malepine Petroleum currently use this route.
