The Benefits of Using a Lightweight Concrete Supplier

Concrete is one of the most used construction materials in the world, and many different types are available to meet your building needs. One type of concrete that is often overlooked but has a variety of benefits is lightweight concrete. This type of concrete is created by using different aggregates and reducing the density of standard concrete mixtures. At Conco Companies, our skilled concrete contractors are experts in producing and placing this unique material for a wide range of applications.

Structural lightweight concrete (LC) has a higher strength than conventional concrete and an in-place density of 90 to 115 lb/ft3 (1440 to 1840 kg/m3). It is a class of concrete that, when properly designed and placed, can provide a solution to many structural challenges.

LC is produced by replacing part or all of the coarse aggregate with aggregates containing a significant amount of voids. The voids are created by omitting the fine fraction of the normal weight aggregate or by including air-filled bubbles in the cement paste matrix (cellular concrete).

The voids reduce the in-place density and allow for a higher compressive strength, while the open pore structure enhances thermal and sound insulation. A variety of materials may be used as a source of lightweight aggregate, such as expanded polystyrene (EPS), rice husk ash, dredged silt, and recycled concrete. All of these materials should be carefully evaluated to ensure they meet the requirements for LC. In practice, they must be approved for use in specific LC strength classes through project-related or technical approvals.
